The Gauhati high court on Wednesday rejected the writ petition challenging the impeachment of the Speaker of the Arunachal Pradesh Assembly, Nabam Rebia, while refusing to go into the merits of a petition challenging the Arunachal governor’s decision advancing the date of the Assembly session.
The order of the court, which will have a cascading impact on the political scenario of the state, implies that the impeachment of Speaker Nabam Rebia in an Assembly session hosted at a makeshift venue and chaired by the deputy speaker was in order.
The court order also clears the legal hurdle in the formation of a new government headed by its new leader, Kalikho Pul, in the state. By refusing to go into the merits of the governor’s decision advancing the Assembly session, the court has also made it clear that the decision of the governor remains effective.
