The apathy of chief ministers of Bihar, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and many other states may land their citizens, living in Assam, in serious trouble and deny enrollment in National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam.
The NRC authorities in Assam have sent 2,68,395 documents to 28 states for verification of documents submitted by residents of respective states but only 5,029 documents have been verified by the respective states.
The coordinator of NRC in Assam, Mr Parteek Hajela, said that they would eventually send in a total of around 5.25 lakh documents to other states for verification.
“These documents have been issued by the respective state governments and their agencies and copies of such papers have been submitted for verification by citizens for inclusion of their names in the updated NRC being prepared in Assam,” he added.
The most documents — totalling 64,547 — has been sent to West Bengal and replies have been received for only 30 of the documents. Bihar has not responded to even one of the 31,380 documents sent by NRC secretariat.
