In a major breakthrough, the Assam police on Friday busted a plan of the United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) to blow up the BJP district headquarters in Upper Assam’s Dibrugrah district.

Informing that the police, acting on a specific tip off, arrested hardcore Ulfa(I) leader Mamon Gogoi, alias Biplab Asom, with explosive, IGP (law and order) S.N. Singh told this newspaper that the Ulfa(I) cadre was sent from Myanmar to execute his plan.

Pointing out that the Ulfa(I) cadre was also assigned the task of targeting the Dibrugarh police station, Mr Singh said that the apprehended Ulfa(I) cadre who was sent by top Ulfa leader has also confessed that he was sent to attack BJP office and Dibrugarh police station, the hometown of Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal. Mr Singh, however, clarified that the security forces have succeeded in diminishing the striking power of the outfit. Admitting that the outfit was desperate to make their presence felt, Mr Singh said that the police has taken all the necessary steps to maintain pressure on the movement of armed rebels in the state.

It is significant that the Ulfa(I) had opposed the BJP in the just-concluded Assembly elections in which it was voted to power.

Ulfa chief Paresh Baruah had tried to dictate political parties whom to give party ticket and whom not to, but the BJP had refused to follow their dictates.

Police on Friday recovered a detonator, a timer device and 700 grams of TNT from the possession of the arrested Ulfa(I) cadre who was sent from the Myanmar camp of the outfit.
