After facing desertions and rebellion in the party, the Congress has now reconstituted its North East Coordination Committee. Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma will be the convenor of the new committee. Conress spokesperson Manish Tewari said that the reconstituted committee has been put in place “to preserve the unity and diversity of the Northeast”.

The Congress also alleged that in the last 28 months since the BJP-led NDA government came to power at the Centre, it has been “working overtime” to destablise the democratically elected governments in the Northeast. Mr Tewari also said that “the inability of the government to manage the larger geo-startegic environment has resulted in repeated intrusions by the Chinese into Arunachal Pradesh”.

There has been a lack of political management coupled with a very aggressive Northeast democratic alliance which has hurt the Congress majorly. Now the Congress wants to get its house back in order. Ousted Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Nabam Tuki said “the restructuring of the committee will unite us all together and will strengthen the Congress at the grassroots level.” Currently all the eight states of the Northeast are represented in this coordination committee.
