New Delhi: A 21-year-old youth, who is the son of a Delhi police officer, was arrested for brutally thrashing a woman in the national capital. After a video of the incident went viral on social media, Union home minister Rajnath Singh took cognisance of the matter and directed DCP Amulya Patnaik to take action.

DCP (West) Monika Bharadwaj confirmed the arrest and said that accused Rohit Kumar Tomar, son of Ashok Kumar Tomar of Tilak Nagar, has been arrested on Friday under sections of voluntarily causing hurt, criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty, and others of the IPC. Rohit has been arrested for brutally beating a woman on September 2 inside an office space, owned by Rohit’s friend Ali Hasan, in Uttam Nagar. Apparently, Mr Hasan tried to stop the accused from hitting the girl but in vain.

A senior police officer said that the accused had assaulted two other women on different occasions.

His former girlfriend approached the police on Tuesday alleging that he had been threatening her to be with him. Following this, he was arrested as a part of preventive measures under the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).

The woman approached the police again on Thursday, alleging that she had been molested. She said that the accused was intimidating her by showing a video of a woman being beaten by him. Dwarka district officials said the woman in the video was subsequently identified and approached on Thursday night. Following this, she gave a written statement in which she alleged that on September 2, Rohit called her to his friend’s office in Uttam Nagar. She alleged that the accused established physical relations with her without her consent. It was when she said that she would file complaint against him in the police station that he started beating her.

Intimidated by the incident, the woman didn’t report the matter to the police that day. However, later when she had been medically examined, a rape case was registered at Uttam Nagar police station.

The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has taken suo moto cognisance and issued notice to the Delhi police in the matter.

Meanwhile, it was observed that appropriate sections were not included in the FIR. Noticeably, the father of the accused is posted as an ASI in the narcotics department of Delhi (Central) police.
