SUV deaths: Opposition demands arrest
The SUV mowed down the children while they were crossing the road at Dharmapur village under Minapur police station.
Patna: Leading a team of Rashtriya Janata Dal members on Monday, the Leader of Opposition in the Bihar assembly, Tejaswi Yadav, marched to Raj Bhavan to meet governor Satyapal Malik. They demanded action against BJP leader Manoj Baitha whose SUV killed nine school students on Saturday.
The SUV mowed down the children while they were crossing the road at Dharmapur village under Minapur police station.
According to officials, the children were below 12 years of age.
Leading the march, Yadav alleged: “Till now no arrest has been made in the incident. It seems the government is protecting the ruling BJP leader, whose vehicle had crushed nine schoolchildren in Muzaffarpur.”
The incident had triggered a violent protest by parents and other villagers who allegedly beat up teachers and vandalised Dharampur government middle school building.
Charging the government with protecting the BJP leader, RJD MLA Bhai Birendra challenged: “We’ll not sit idle and kick off protest on road until his (Baitha) arrest.”
The Muzaffarpur police have already lodged an FIR against Mr Baitha for the deaths. Director-general of police P.K. Thakur also told journalists that “the accused persons will be arrested soon as the police have seized a mobile phone as evidence from the vehicle.”
