Does government want to remove CBFC chairman

If the initiative taken by a ruling BJP MP is any indication, then the continuation of controversial Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) chairperson Pahlaj Nihalani is under a cloud. Rajya Sabha MP Swapan Dasgupta was seen collecting the signatures of Opposition MPs for moving a motion in the RS for discussion on Mr Nihalani’s functioning. Mr Nihalani is a known admirer of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and is also close to the RSS. One of the signatories was CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury. He said, “When the motion is discussed, I will definitely ask for the chairperson’s resignation.”

Incidentally, Swapan told many of his colleagues that he wants to focus more on the CBFC’s functioning. One wonders if a BJP MP can move a motion without the backing of the section of the Central government It will be interesting to see if the motion is debated in the house of elders.
