West Bengal chief minister and Trinamul Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday said that the more the Opposition and a section of the media spread canards against her, the bigger her party’s victory in the ongoing Assembly elections in Bengal will be.

“The more the CPI(M), Congress and the BJP get jealous and try to defame us, the better will be Trinamul Congress’ performance in every round of the ongoing elections,” she said while addressing an election rally in Jagatballabhpur in Howrah.

She claimed that after the elections, the CPI(M) and the Congress would be decimated. “So far as Delhi is concerned, after making a mess of governance at the Centre, it does not have the right to even cast its glance at Bengal,” she added.

She repeated her charge that the BJP merely divided the society along communal lines and fomented riots. “The BJP has no right to lecture Mamata,” she added.

Later, addressing another rally in Howrah’s Sankrail, Ms Banerjee said that there should be an investigation into the party funds of every political party. “All the Opposition parties are accusing us of taking money while I have documents which will prove that they also have received funds from unknown sources,” she alleged.

She claimed that she had not witnessed an election as acrimonious as the ongoing Assembly polls. “Earlier, political parties used to campaign on their respective agenda and then contest the polls. But this time Delhi is trying to terrorise use,” she said.

Ms Banerjee said that she was not afraid of a fight and dared the BJP to fight her politically. “The manner in which they are insulting Bengal will not be tolerated,” she added.

Ms Banerjee then went on to highlight the successes of her government in the past five years. “I can give my life for the people of Bengal but I can never betray their trust,” she claimed.
