Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who arrives Tuesday on a day-long visit to Assam, will kick off the BJP’s poll campaign by addressing two public meetings: one at Kokrajhar and the second in Guwahati.

The Kokrajhar meeting is more significant as it has been hosted by the Bodoland People’s Party, which intends to announce its tieup with the BJP in the PM’s presence. BPF chief Hagrama Mohiliary will share the dais with Mr Modi, who is also expected to announce a special package to develop the Bodoland Territorial Council area.

The BPF has 12 MLAs in the 126-member Assembly and earlier supported the Tarun Gogoi government. After the rally, Mr Modi will attend a BJP youth wing function in Guwahati. The PM is also expected to announce a series of meetings called “Assam Nirman” among groups of intellectuals, of around 5,000 in six cities, on the state’s development. At each meeting, a Union minister will be present. The first one will be addressed by finance minister Arun Jaitley.

The PM will also visit IIT Guwahati to lay the foundation stone of a remote control device.
