Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi said on Wednesday that the Centre’s move to demonetise Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes has thrown ordinary people into a spiral of chaos.

He asked Prime Minster Narendra Modi to explain how replacing Rs 1,000 notes with Rs 2,000 ones would help end the scourge of black money.

Mr Gandhi said the government’s move shows how little the PM cares for the ordinary people, including farmers and housewives, while the real culprits stay unaffected with their black money stashed abroad.

Former finance minister P. Chidambaram also slammed the decision. “I don’t encourage or support unaccounted wealth or income, but there’s a non-monetised economy, you cannot call all of it black money,” he said.
