The bodies of three boys, who were brothers, were recovered on Saturday from a well, while their mother was rescued by locals at Gurujanga village under in Orissa’s Angul district, 250 km from Bhubaneswar. After being rescued, the mother, identified as Sobhagini Behera, was absconding.

Reports said Shobhagini jumped into the well near the house, along with her three children. The locals swung into action, only to recover the bodies of the kids. They were between four and nine years of age.

Neighbours said that Sobhagini was upset after her husband was put behind bars in connection with a criminal case.

“Ever since her husband was arrested a year ago, she was leading a very miserable life. She could not properly feed her children and always appeared depressed,” a neighbour said.

“We have registered a case and started a probe. It appears she took take the step because of her financial hardship. However, the exact reason can be known only after the probe is over,” the police said.

The bodies of the children were sent to Kishor Nagar hospital for postmortem. A manhunt has been launched to nab the absconding woman.
