The Delhi police, talking about Abdul Sami, the fifth person arrested on suspicion of being linked to Al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS), said, “Sami left for Dubai in January 2014, he stayed there for a month before moving to Karachi. From there, he went to Mansehra in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan, where he received training in handling AK-47s and light machine guns. Umar Hyderabadi received the help of Maulana Anzar Shah Qasim, the fourth arrest, in going to Pakistan.”

Sami’s movements, the police said, were being coordinated by a handler identified as Yusuf from Pakistan. It had earlier emerged that Yusuf was also in touch with Mohammed Asif, who was the first person arrested and is believed to be one of the founding members and the head (amir) of AQIS’s motivation, recruitment and training wing. Police sources said Sami had come to attend a jamaat (gathering) in Mewat when he was caught while he was waiting for a call from madrasa cleric Abdul Rahman on the next course of action.
