Spell out objections to PM Modi biopic, Congress asked

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday made it clear that it cannot pass an order to stop the release of the Narendra Modi biopic unless the Congress spokesperson, the petitioner, spelled out the reasons for his objection to the release of the film.

A three-judge bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justices Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna asked the petitioner, Aman Panwar, to bring on record the objections to the contents of the film so that it could examine whether an interim order could be passed or not.

Senior counsel Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for the petitioner, submitted that the fim is a “propaganda vehicle being timed to release in coordination with the upcoming elections.”

He said the movie was driven by little to no artistic inspiration and was instead designed to manipulate, influence and impress viewers and voters in the run-up to the elections.

The CJI asked the petitioner how could the court stall the release of a film if the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) certifies it.
