New Delhi: Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel has called for Rahul Gandhi to be anointed as the Congress party chief again. He said only Mr Gandhi can lead the Congress going forward. Talking to this newspaper Mr Baghel said that all party workers wholeheartedly support him for the top post in the party.

“Rahul Gandhi must become the Congress party president because the workers across the country support him. He understands the country and people love him. He speaks openly on national issues. Mr Gandhi should take the responsibility of party president at the earliest,” Mr Baghel said.

The statement of the Chhattisgarh chief minister assumes significance as a change in congress chief is likely to be made within the next few months. Mr Gandhi, who took charge as Congress president in 2017, resigned from the post following disastrous defeat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. After his resignation, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi was elected as Congress interim president.

Talking about the ongoing assembly polls in Jharkhand, Mr Baghel exuded confidence saying that the Congress will win by a two-thirds majority in the ensuing elections.

The Chhattisgarh chief minister is one of the star campaigners and key strategists for the congress in Jharkhand and has been a regular visitor to the state over the past six months.

In another scathing attack on the Narendra Modi government, Baghel also alleged that the Chattisgarh government is not getting money of Good and Services Tax (GST) from the Centre.
