Patna: Disappointed over Nalanda University Chancellor George Yeo’s resignation, Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar has asked the Centre “not to tamper with the essence behind the idea of Nalanda” by interfering into the affairs of the institution.

In a letter to Union minister Sushma Swaraj, the Bihar chief minister said that “George Yoe has reportedly resigned from the post pointing out the Centre’s “intervention in the functioning of the institution”. Mr Yoe in his resignation letter also mentioned that he was not taken into confidence regarding the decision to dissolve the previous governing board, Mr Kumar added.

“The fact that an important decision was taken without consulting the Chancellor of the University is disturbing and raises questions about the autonomy of the university”, Mr Kumar wrote in a strongly-worded letter to Ms Swaraj.

“All the stakeholders are worried about the direction in which the university is headed,” the letter added. The university currently has 130 students from 13 countries.

Mr Yoe, a former foreign minister of Singapore, had resigned as the chancellor of the university on November 25 after the old governing body of the university was dissolved without keeping him in the loop.
