Patna: Bihar deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi’s cavalcade was attacked with stones late on Tuesday evening in Vaishali district’s Chaksikandra area.

Sources close to Mr Modi said that the incident occurred when he was on his way to attend a function in Vaishali.

Though Mr Modi escaped unhurt, he alleged that attackers were RJD workers. “I feel that the attack was carried out by the RJD after I exposed Lalu Yadav’s benami properties. Such kind of cowardly attack will not stop me from raising issues like these,” he said. The attack on his vehicle is being seen as a serious breach of security. Government insiders said that officials have been asked to initiate action against the responsible police personnel for their failure in providing security to the deputy chief minister.

“Attack on deputy chief minister cavalcade is a serious issue which cannot be ignored. Vaishali SP has been asked to investigate the matter and initiate action against responsible police officials,” JD(U) spokesperson Niraj Kumar told this newspaper immediately after the incident occurred.

Sources said that as part of precautionary measures, adequate police force has been deployed in the area where the incident occurred on Tuesday evening.

NDA leaders who witnessed the attack said that leader of Opposition, Tejashwi Yadav, had crossed a few minutes ago when Mr Modi’s cavalcade arrived in the area.

“His (Tejashwi Yadav) supporters were still on the road when Sushil Kumar Modi crossed the area. They first started shouting anti-BJP slogans and then pelted stones at his car,” Rashtriya Lok Samta Party district President Kamal Singh told this newspaper.
