Lucknow: Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav, on Friday, sought a judicial probe into the deaths of 30 children in the BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur.

He said that inquiry should be held by a sitting Supreme Court judge because all other investigating agencies including CBI were under the BJP-led government and justice could not be expected from them.

Talking to reporters here on Friday, Mr Yadav said that the police was working at the behest of BJP and was targeting Samajwadi workers.

“The police have taken a ‘supari’ (contract) to ensure that BJP leaders are unanimously elected as zila panchayat heads. This was responsible for the violence in Auraiyya where the cops prevented us from filing the nomination,” he said.

He also slammed the police for misbehaving with former MP Pradeep Yadav during the Auraiyya violence. Pradeep Yadav was among the Samajwadi leaders who were arrested in connection with the violence during the zila panchayat polls on August 16..

Mr Yadav also mounted a scathing attack on UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on his statement on Janamashtami celebrations in police stations. The Chief Minister had said that these functions were stopped during the previous regime.

“When we return to power, we will give Rs 5 lakh to every police stations for Janamashtami as well as Eid celebrations,” he said.
