Congress president Sonia Gandhi expressed regret on Tuesday that she could not complete her visit to Varanasi due to her illness but said she would come back soon for a darshan of Kashi Vishwanath.

“Due to illness, I could not complete my visit for which I regret. I could not seek the blessings of Kashi Vishwanth in the holy month of Savan. I will come back soon. I am thankful to all citizens of Varanasi and Congress workers for the love and affection”, she said in a statement.

Earlier, launching an all out attack on the Narendra Modi government, she predicted that the government built on the “foundation of false assurances” could not last long as people would soon call it to account and “give a befitting response to its false promises.”

Furthermore, she said, “This is a government of a handful of people, a handful of industrialists and it pays special attention to their needs. No one bothers about the poor, backward, minorities and our beloved sisters. A large section of the country is feeling neglected and weak and apprehensive about the future.”

She also made a veiled attack on the Prime Minister saying those who are talking of “Congrerss mukt Bharat” do not have a clue about the strength of the party. Without naming Mr Modi and the BJP she said they have no idea of the strengths of the

The Congress, which is, “not only an institution or a group of people but it is a thought, ideology which fills every part of India. Congress cannot be finished as it is in every house, village and unites India. Without Congress nobody can think of modern India,” Mrs Gandhi said.

She said UP needs a government which can work for development, uplift of the poor and the backward and work for women and youth. “The Congress alone can give such a government under the leadership of Sheila Dikshit and I believe that Congress governemnt will work for women, youth, poor, backward while maintaining law and order.”

She hoped that the coming Assembly polls would be held in a peaceful atmosphere.
