An Assam Cabinet minister on Tuesday floated the name of Gaurav Gogoi, son of Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi, for the party’s chief ministerial candidate in the 2016 Assembly elections.

Claiming that the Junior Gogoi would be the chief ministerial candidate of the party in 2016, state irrigation minister Chandan Sarkar told reporters that the Congress high command is also very happy with his performance in Parliament.

Pointing out that there was no other contender in the party, Mr Sarkar said that former health minister and now BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma had raised the banner of revolt against Mr Gogoi just because he wanted to be the CM candidate after Mr Gogoi. “Mr Sarma is no longer in the party. We are getting old so the new generation has to take over the leadership. I also think that Gogoi Junior is the best candidate to lead the party,” said Mr Sarkar.
