Two days after Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal met President Pranab Mukherjee over the issue of missing JNU student Najeeb Ahmed, Najeeb’s mother met home minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday, who assured her of his intervention to find out her son. Fatima Nafees and her other family members urged the home minister to trace Najeeb, a native of Badaun in Uttar Pradesh, who is untraceable since October 15. Mr Singh was patient with Najeeb’s mother and other family members and listened to all their grievances. The SP MP from Badaun, Dharmendra Yadav, who accompanied Najeeb’s family to this meeting, said that the home minister has assured them of efforts being made to trace Najeeb at the earliest.

However, Najeeb’s sister Sadaf rubbished allegations that he was mentally unstable and said efforts are being made to defame him instead of tracing him. “He had cracked university exams, he is a studious child. Do you think a person studying at such a prestigious institution can be mentally unstable I request (all) that please don’t defame him. He had sleeping problems that children who are studying often have. He had no other problem,” she said.

Meanwhile, taking a dig at the government over its failure to find Najeeb, former JNU Students’ Union president Kanhaiya Kumar on Tuesday said they could find 3,000 used condoms from the campus but could not trace a missing student.

His comment was aimed at lawmaker Gyandev Ahuja, who had said in February that about 3,000 used condoms could be found on JNU campus every day.
