As Punjab remained on high alert, the state police, in a massive combing operation on Monday, arrested three arms and drug smugglers and recovered Pakistani SIM card, mobiles, weapons and ammunition from their possession.
Those arrested were carrying carbine and four pistols of Pakistan, Brazilian and Chinese make. A total of 30 mobile phones and a SIM card registered in Pakistan were seized from them.
Those arrested were identified as Gurjant Singh, Sandeep and Jitendra. According to the police, they were not terrorists but local arms and drug smugglers with connections in Pakistan.
The police said that Gurjant was arrested earlier too but had escaped from Firozpur jail in 2013. The police is investigating the matter and trying to find out the movements of the three arrested in the last one month. Security agencies are also trying to get the details of their phone conversations.
The arrests have come days after terrorists stormed Pathankot’s air base and killed seven officials. Soon after the terror attack, a high alert was sounded in Punjab and security was tightened across the state.
