The Bihar government on Wednesday announced extending government jobs to the third gender. Social welfare minister Kumari Manju Verma made the announcement while replying to JD(U) legislator Shyam Rajak’s question in the state Assembly on Wednesday.

The decision made by the state government will benefit the entire transgender community in Bihar as they have been earning their living by either performing in various ceremonies or begging in the streets.

After the announcement in the state legislative Assembly on Wednesday several leaders of the ruling Grand Secular Slliance called the decision historic.

Assuring the house that a welfare board will be set up for the third gender community soon Welfare Minister Kumar Manjhu Verma said, “They will be entitled to facilities being provided to backward class and will also be given reservation in government jobs and all government educational institutions”.

Earlier the state cabinet had given a nod to recognize the community as the third gender following the Supreme Court’s direction. According to officials the community was included in schedule 2 of the list of backward class in the state and will be provided benefits as per the rules.
