The key architect of the BJP’s campaign Himanta Biswa Sarma here on Thursday said that it was historic win for the BJP in Assam but full of hopes and aspirations of the people.

Talking to this newspaper here on Thursday, Mr Sarma said, “This victory of the BJP has been historic. It is more significant and sweet to me as it has come just after I was insulted and humiliated in the Congress by its vice-president Rahul Gandhi and chief minister Tarun Gogoi.” He said that the people of Assam has also rejected the vision of Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi in its verdict.

Mr Sarma, however, clarified that this election result has bigger message that Assam wanted to grow with vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “I sincerely thanks the people of Assam for expressing their faith in the leadership of the BJP. I would also like to reiterate that each and every promises that BJP has given in its vision document will be implemented,” Mr Sarma said, adding that this victory may have not been possible without the alliance of the BJP with the BPF, AGP and other like-minded forces. “I would like to thank our party president Amit Shah whose vision and support made it possible,” said Mr Sarma, thanking general secretary in-charge of Assam Ram Madhav.

He worked tirelessly to ensure the victory of the party, said Mr Sarma who himself addressed record 252 rallies and did the padyatra of 170 km during the elections.

Mr Sarma a lawyer-turn politician has been the most influential political figure in Assam. Nurtured by former chief minister Hiteswar Saikia, Mr Sarma, first became an MLA at the age of 33 in 2001 from the prestigious Jalukbari constituency. Sharp political acumen and strong networking skills helped him emerge as the most trusted lieutenant of chief minister Tarun Gogoi till 2011 when the arrival of Mr Gogoi’s son Mr Gaurav in Assam’s political scenario created a rift between the two.
