Aung San Suu Kyi’s party has submitted a proposal in Myanmar’s Parliament to make her a “state adviser”, a position more powerful than that of the President. While Ms Suu Kyi has struggled long for this moment — Myanmar’s first democratically elected government in 50 years — she could have devolved power to her party workers instead of assuming an extra-constitutional role. This move undermines democracy.
