A survey conducted by the All-India Democratic Women’s Association revealed that nearly 30 per cent of all honour killings in the country take place in western Uttar Pradesh alone. The study pointed out that a major factor behind these killings is the khap panchayat. A separate, stringent law to check honour killings must be made and, in such episodes, the community, police and family members must be held accountable.
