Lakme Fashion Week: A melange of sustainabe fashion

A modern glimpse of Benares
Hemang Agarwal’s Precious Metals collection highlighted his signature Benares style. However, this time the designer had worked with master weavers in Benaras to create modern designs and motifs for his dazzling collection. Hemang combined precious metal yarns with pastel colours, perfect for the heat of the summer. The variety of dresses, summer trenches, pleated skirts, culottes, trousers and saris, saw a prominent feature in the form of a side pocket and box pleats.

From the artisans to the ramp
Sourced from the Usha Silai fashion school, these dresses were handmade by artisans. Of them, Sayantan Sarkar’s collection for the 24 South Parganas, called The Girl From The Pages Of The Diary makes use of Khadi and linen blends, along with batik prints that revealed the lush green foliage of the village, which is his inspiration.  The blue or green blouses, layered dresses, long capes and wrap-around pants showed a mix of rustic and urbane styles.

Inspired by the earth
Rajesh Pratap Singh’s special Eco Collection showcased a line made completely from lyocell fibres, which are extracted from natural raw wood that comes from socially and environmentally responsible forests in Europe blended with silks and stainless steel to give it flash. The sari-inspired dresses, skirts and quaint dhoti bottom wear dominated the ramp, as did the bold contrasts of colours.
