Make your beauty routine eco-friendly with these tips
Refillable containers, green beauty and 'naked' products are revolutionising the beauty industry.
Becoming more environment friendly in our lifestyle is the need of the hour. We need to cut down on plastic usage in every aspect our lifestyle. There are several steps we can take to make our beauty routine more eco-friendly.
The fashion and beauty industry is one of the planet’s biggest polluters and with every purchase we make, we add more and more plastic waste to the world. Here are four handy tips with which we can prioritise the environment, as suggested by Tatler:
Ditch the disposables
Now, people avoid using plastic bags and make it point to use reusable cloth bags. Plastic contains are slowly making way for steel and glass ones. But the initiate does not seem to have reached our beauty cabinets. Swap your single use items with more durable and long-lasting alternatives.
Some examples are using a metal razor instead of the disposable plastic ones. Switch up your make up remover wipes with a cotton swab and a make-up remover. Not only is this eco-friendly, but it is also better for your skin. Brushes with bamboo bristles are now gaining popularity over those with plastic bristles.
Look for less packaging
When shopping, try opting for products that have minimum packaging. This reduces the amount of disposable waste as well as its manufacturing cost. Several brands are now coming up with packaging free products like soap and shampoo bars.
These are solid, hand-crafted bars of all sorts of products like soaps, face wash, shampoo, shaving cream and even scrub and creams. This ‘naked’ beauty trend can save a lot of plastic used in packaging.
Choose wisely
Getting packaging-less products is quite difficult and thus, if you can’t avoid plastic packaging altogether, then it is better to opt for more eco-friendly alternatives like glass bottles. Many international brands are experimenting with various materials like bamboo wood, zero-waste cardboard and paper packaging as well. Some brands are also coming up with long-lasting and refillable packaging.
Read the labels
Green beauty is a fashionable term to use, but not everyone knows the real meaning behind it. The best way to support this cause is by carefully reading the labels of your products. Beauty brands have certain certifications like Leaping Bunny Programme, PETA, the Soil Association and Ecocert which verify if the product is cruelty-free or not. These certifications make sure that the products were not tested on animals.
Also try to avoid plastic microbeads in your exfoliators. Avoid products with polyethylene and nylon as well. Some beauty product ingredients like parabens, SLS, sulphates, petroleum derivates and palm oil are harmful for your skin. Avoiding these are imperative.
