From the cat-themed manicure of Kesha to Cardi B's vibrant Swarovski crystal adorned talons, nail artists have been constantly challenging their boundaries.

The master of cubism now has a new canvas — the nail. Pablo Picasso inspired nail art is the latest rage in the Instagram beauty world as girls are opting to sport abstract mini art works on their nails.

From the cat-themed manicure of Kesha to Cardi B’s vibrant Swarovski crystal adorned talons, nail artists have been constantly challenging their boundaries. Manicurists have now settled on turning nails into actual pieces of art — reinterpreting Pablo Picasso’s abstract art and creating miniatures —  known as Picasso nails.

Reena Batra, director at CLAW, finds it an interesting nail fashion. “It’s an interesting concept and a much required change as competition at a global level forces artists to think out of the box. Customers too seek more innovative and technical designs, hence, the emphasis on innovative designs and new nail looks.”

“Developing intricate designs of artwork on such a miniature canvas is like creating magic,”  says Aashmeen Munjaal, hair and makeup expert, who finds the trend a relief from the regular matte and gloss.

Talking about the new trends in painted talons, Munjaal feels that technology, especially the social media, has been a strong catalyst behind it. “Social media not only provides exposure to young artists, but also gives them a platform to exhibit their talent and creativity. Thus, increasing the possibility of something unexpected becoming a trend.”
