Bangladesh surgeons successfully separate twins joined at the spine
The surgery is the first successful one in Bangladesh and has given hope to others suffering similar conditions.
Heartbreaking stories of children being born with rare conditions at birth have been emerging from India and neighbouring countries over the past few years. But better healthcare and medical know how have come to the rescue and spread hope with several successful surgeries.
Tofa and Tahura from Dhaka were born joined at the spine and rectum and faced a similar ordeal. But a groundbreaking surgery made sure that the conjoined twins were separated successfully, as they can look forward to life as any other child.
This is a first of its kind procedure in Bangladesh and involved a dozen surgeons dedicated to the delicate process. The sisters will now need two more surgeries to restructure their organs after the crucial separation.
The surgery took around nine hours and the twins are now in a stable condition but have been kept in the ICU due to risk of infections. Their parents who are a poor couple from a remote village were relieved to know the outcome.
