The fight for women’s rights is gaining momentum across the globe as gender equality in different walks of life has come under the spotlight over past few decades. While it is crucial to end gender based discrimination to build a better society, it may also improve health and well being of people.

Researchers have discovered that people who live in countries with higher gender equality have better quality of sleep. The effect in countries where women have more economic and political power is seen in both men and women.

The findings show that better division of domestic tasks and financial responsibilities works in favour of both sexes. While both had different factors disrupting their sleep such as children for women and finances for men, people in countries with more equality had more restful sleep overall.

This suggests that efforts to empower women may also turn out to have better outcomes on the individual level as well.
