Doctors find smartphones easier to use while looking inside brains for surgery

The impact of technology on every aspect of life has been witnessed in the past few decades. The field of medicine also hasn’t been left untouched by these innovations.

But while more technology is specifically being created for medical procedures, smartphones seem to dominate in this case as well. Doctors in Brazil have used phones for successfully carrying out 40 surgeries.

Doctors find smartphones more useful for procedures like neuroendoscopy which they look inside the brain through a small incision. Being easy to use, smaller in size and less expensive than sophisticated equipments along with high data collection capabilities makes phones effective for such a surgery.

Researchers even found that smartphones may become essential medical devices with time. While video systems with a camera, lighting and control unit are normally used for neuroendoscopy, integrating smartphones with an endoscope cuts out the video system making things more convenient.

Instead of having to look at the video monitor on the side, surgeons can have the focus of the phone screen right in front of them. The images are also relayed to screens in the operating room using WiFi.
