Ask any interior professional and they would tell you that the easiest way to brighten up a boring place is with pop coloured accents. An impactful piece of pop art or a bright highlight in a neutral space is always a show-stopper for any room with a monochromatic décor. The bold tones are just the best fit when it comes to lifting an entire space and colours like light blue, mint green and lavender can give an instant boost to a warm winter decor. How to do it right without making it jarring for eyes, we find out.

A neutral toned room acts like a perfect blank canvas for your creativity in home décor. You can actually have a new colour scheme, when you get bored with the old one, by just adding pops shades in various ways, without burning a hole in your pocket mentions interior expert Pooja Khanduja, founder at a wallpaper firm. She says, “The fastest and the easiest way to define a colour scheme for your room is cushions and throws. Combine the solids in complementing colours with floral or geometric, printed or embroidered. Adding a colourful rug in striking patterns is another great way to uplift the colour quotient of your room. Pick colours from the rug to choose the accessories for your coffee table – coloured glassware, flowers, candles or votives. Don’t be scared of using bold colours and mixed media collages. Cover a wall or a niche with eclectic wallpaper to add the needed oomph, without getting into major makeover.”

Adding some fresh colours and fun hues through beautiful bedding, accent cushions, wall décor, accessories, lighting or plants can always make your space more surprising and dynamic. “Colours which compliments with fall shades this season are shades of living coral, mustard, purist blue and lavender,” according to interior designer Ankita Chand. She recommends, “Always add accent colours like blue, pink or mustard in small doses to make your space more soothing. It will balance in the right way. Adding one accent through beautifully printed cushions, comforters, pillows, lighting, accent accessories, wall décor with neutral will make real statement into your space and will maintain the timeless feel of your home. Soft furnishings are always the best option to add pop into your space. Bedding in rich tones with fresh flowers near the window add a bright touch. Explore your personal style by adding DIY accents and fill your space with plants with pots like lime green, orange and red to make your space look livelier. Bring your inner artist by making easy modern art as wall décor. Make your own accessories by reusing glass by colouring them in fresh colours and use them as vase.”

Although it’s a great idea to add bright highlights, the situation can get extremely tricky as it is easy to do them wrong. Dealing with decor can get difficult, especially when it’s time to upgrade them without additional expense. “Highlights should only be used to lift up a dull corner be it through colours or decor items,” cautions décor expert Nisha Mehta. She says, “Even while doing so one should avoid adding numerous elements. A solid colour and signature decor item does enough to make a space exclusive, promising to grab eyeballs immediately. One can add a statement frame or statue to a corner which can be highlighted with a spotlight on top. Pistachio green, purple and nebula blue are among the few colours that are trending this season and perfectly compliment the fall season palette. If you have a signature frame in your space, try to add a spotlight to highlight the details and make it the statement piece in your room. Additionally, mirror work on clay pots, simply handcrafted paper flowers, painting old wine bottles and adding lights to them would be great for illuminating small corners in one’s bedroom, painting white plates and adding them to a showcase in the living room are few inexpensive ways to add a dash of pop to your decor.”
