South India dominates with retweets

South Indian film #Sarkar led the rise of regional entertainment conversations on Twitter this year. The film starring Thalapathy Vijay earned massive engagement from the film aficionados on Twitter for its star power and generated conversations on its political theme.

Twitter was a stage for any topic imaginable in the world this year and not just confined to celebrities. The cinema industry yet again is front runner when it comes to trends with #Sarkar,#Viswasam, #BharatAneNenu, #AravindhaSametha, #Rangasthalam, #Kaala and TV show #BiggBossTelugu2 clinching seven of the top 10 hashtags this year.

On the other hand, it is certainly a welcome change that #MeToo in India added to the top hashtag trends while Twitter reacted en masse as people demanded #JusticeForAsifa, engaged in ongoing political debates on #KarnatakaElection and #Aadhaar. #KeralaFloods brought together government agencies, relief organisations, famous personalities and regular people on the platform to help rebuild Kerala as they utilised Twitter to share information and crowd-source relief and assistance.

India celebrated sports stars like never before, especially #AsianGames and Indian athletes, including Bajrang Punia, Hima Das and PV Sindhu won laurels. India lived #DeepVeer’s romance especially from the launch of Padmaavat earlier this year to wedding bells in November, celebrity couple Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh continued to give people major relationship goals and became the talk of the town on Twitter in 2018.
