Hymn for the winter
What's with all the happy faces in Delhi? Well, who can blame them. After all, winter is here!
It was a long summer, then a muggy monsoon, and now — barring the pollution, of course — we are well into Delhi’s much-loved winter. The season lets people step out and enjoy the city's environs, and the otherwise hot-headed Delhiites seem to acquire an infectious cool.
Riya Gupta, who has lived in the capital for the past 19 years, agrees. She feels that winter in Delhi is a beautiful experience, be it the warm cappuccino cravings or the cosy sweaters and comfy clothes. She says, “It’s a lovely getaway from the usual heat and humid climate, and I’m super excited for it. Everything across the city looks absolutely stunning, foggy and dark. This is probably the best time to visit the city if one wants to experience the infamous “Dilli ki Sardi!”
People from around the world generally pick wintertime to visit the national capital. Delhiites such as Rahul Shah also consider the season an opportunity to savour roadside tea. Rahul reveals, “I am not a tea lover as such but during winter I love to sip roadside tea with my friends or during breaks from office. It goes particularly well with the cold weather.”
For Aditi Singh, a college goer, the season is an opportunity to hang around the college grounds, engaging in gup-shup and fun with her friends. She says, “My friends and I usually chill in our college ground and enjoy the sun with lots of talks and laughter.” Like Aditi, there are many people who enjoy sunbaths in their society park or terrace.
The famous wintertime hangout areas in the city, such as Connaught Place, Khan market and Champa Gali, attract quite the crowd during the season, as do cafés with outdoor seating. Akshara Srivastava, a 23-years-old employee of a company, says, “There is nothing cosier than chilling with your friends and family for lunches at your favourite café during the Delhi winters. Khan Market has some amazing cafés and one of my favourites happens to be called Perch. You can soak in the warmth of the sun and indulge in deep conversations while eating your favourite cheesecake and sipping coffee!”
Well, we wouldn’t mind a bite of that either!
