Rise of the mom vloggers
Three women share their stories of juggling their roles of being a mother and running popular Youtube channels.
The demands of motherhood often demand the sacrifice of some personal desires. But there are some women who are balancing their duties of being a mom with successfully chasing their dreams. Meet three mothers who have forayed into Youtube vlogging as a profession.
Shruti Anand, Roshini Mukherjee and Kabita Singh run their own Youtube channels on different topics, and are very popular on Youtube. One thread that also connects the channels of Shruti, Roshini and Kabita is that they all are utility-based and teach the viewer a new thing with each video.
While the concept of people earning via Youtube vlogging is still new to many, these three women have proved their mettle on this highly competitive platform.
Kabita Singh, who leads a prominent cooking channel with over 14 lakh subscribers, makes sure that she uploads at least three videos per week. She started vlogging in 2014. “One of my friends wanted to hire me for editing her Youtube videos. So I thought, why not do it for myself. So I started this work,” she shares. In fact it was on Youtube that she learned to edit videos as well.
One of the challenges of being a vlogger and a mother of young kids was finding a quiet place to record the voiceovers. “Recording gets difficult around children, I really have to struggle for that and wait for them to sleep,” she says. Kabita spends a lot of time with her children and even edits her videos while playing with them.
The channel has brought in an income, “but I didn’t have any expectations from my channel when I started, and even today when it has become successful, I don’t have much expectations,” says Kabita. She is grateful for her subscribers as well as the fact that she can juggle all these roles.
Kabita shares that the channel has also made her family very happy. “Because I experiment with food, we get to eat all this at home as well and it keeps my children excited as well. Although they are too young to completely understand what I am doing, they do like the food,” she adds.
Vlogger Shruti Anand is also a mother. She is the creator of one of the leading fashion and beauty channels in India, with over 7 lakh subscribers, and works full-time for her channel. “I initially started this channel to make friends. I didn’t know it would catch on and become such a sensation. I had to leave my job because we were relocating. I generally make videos about fashion and beauty, but once I made a video on periods and it went viral, as many people were curious about it. At the same time I got a lot of backlash as well. But that is part of this job, just like any other job, this too has its flaws. A supportive family does help in such times.”
Another vlogger, Roshini Mukherjee is the creator of ExamFear Education YT channel, with over 2.5 lakh subscribers and over 5,500 uploaded videos. While she is not a mother, she is a motherly figure to several children who learn from her online. Her channel provides free education for children from the class 6 to 12 on various subjects. “Of course it is more tedious to create a video on this topic as one has to put in a lot of research before conceptualising a topic. But I was passionate about teaching and that helped me create this channel,” she shares.
“A lot of students took interest and they were demanding more material. So in 2014, I resigned from my job and started vlogging full-time. I always wanted to do this and vlogging is just one of the mediums that worked for me,” she adds.
