Mothers are often the first fashion idols and inspirations for their daughters, with the little ones raiding their mums’ closets to try on the pretty blouse or the red lippie on the sly. And mums love dressing up their little daughters in all things pretty. And one fashion statement the two make together that invariably makes for a picture perfect moment is — mother-daughter twinning.

Mom-and-me fashion is making a comeback with several celebrities and their daughters spotted sporting matching outfits. Recently actress Kajol and daughter Nysa were both seen dressed in black together. Wanitha Ashok, fitness expert and social activist, and her daughter love dressing up in identical sportswear. “We also love accessorising the same way — pearl studs and hoops are a favourite with both of us. Touch wood! I am blessed to have a daughter who doubles up as my best friend, she is my shoulder to cry on and also my fashion critic. Her approval is a must before I step out to big events. She has an amazing fashion sense. We love discussing Instagram stories, Pinterest, fitness and diet fads, workouts and fashion like two friends.”

Fashion changes and evolves over time. And each generation has its own trends and fashion high points. Stylish moms also love sporting much that’s new and edgy, and their stylish daughters love a touch of timeless chic, and therein lies their common fashion ground. “I follow all the latest trends yet there are times when I do feel like dressing up like my mother. Especially when it comes to classical, Indian dressing. When it comes to a saree or an Indian suit, I look up to her style sense and we wear similar clothes. My mother is my best friend, that says it all. As my mother grows older I realise that she is more vulnerable and fragile and in crisis situations when she panics, I am there to calm her and advice her. So I am more than a daughter at such times,” says Bandana Sondhi, model and fashion expert.
