Irony: Security cameras stolen

The eyes are a pivotal organ, as they allow us to be vigilant when it comes to our surroundings. The same can be said about closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras, in relation to the city. But while they may be the chowkidar of the city, what happens when that very chowkidar is kidnapped, or, in this case, stolen?

Recently, the Delhi CM, Arvind Kejriwal, announced the installation of CCTV cameras in the city in an effort to fight crime. He even said that the devices will be installed in schools; more specifically, in the classrooms. They have, in fact, already been installed in Jahangirpuri and Jhungi Basti, among other areas. But the city might have witnessed a setback as it was reported that some of the CCTVs have been stolen. As of now, 50 cameras from Adarsh Nagar are reported to be stolen. Interestingly, these cameras were not yet functional at the time of the crime.

It has also been reported that the Gover-nment is yet to install the monitoring systems for these cameras. How-ever, Vijay-anta Arya, DCP, Northwest Delhi, says that no such complaints have being lodged as of now.

Despite that, netizens went nuts when the news broke out. While one Twitter user called the incident hilarious, another said that the time is not far where the thieves might even steal the CCTV cameras from ATMs. A tweet read, “(The CCTV cameras are) meant for catching thieves, CCTV cameras stolen in Delhi. Chowkidar chor nahin, us ki to khud chori ho rahi hai!!! (The security guard is not the thief but he is the one being robbed)”

One of the citizens living in the area of crime, who did not wish to be named, says that it's unfortunate that these cameras are being stolen around the Capital. He then adds, “is is very outrageous and requires immediate attention and appropriate measures from the government to ensure that this doesn't repeat again.”
