Fire rages from fuel prices

The most curious part is that while oil prices were at least $112 per barrel in May 2014 when the BJP-NDA took over.

Update: 2018-05-24 20:48 GMT
Having questioned rising fuel prices between 2011 and 2014 by making a dance and song about it, the ruling forces are now facing the wrath of the Indian public.

The fire from the fuel price rise is hotter than the Indian summer. International oil prices have gone up recently and crossed $80 per barrel this month. However, Indians have always paid an abnormally high price at the pump because of Central and State taxes that amount to nearly 50 per cent of the price of a litre of fuel extracted from crude, besides commission, etc and dispensed at the pump. Indians pay the highest petrol-diesel prices in South Asia.

The most curious part is that while oil prices were at least $112 per barrel in May 2014 when the BJP-NDA took over, the petrol price was between Rs 75 and Rs 80 per litre in different cities. And when oil is selling at $80 a barrel now, the price of one litre is around Rs 84. No one can work out the maths of this although we know that a greedy Centre and States have been piling on excise and VAT on fossil fuel to up their revenues.

Having questioned rising fuel prices between 2011 and 2014 by making a dance and song about it, the ruling forces are now facing the wrath of the Indian public. BJP bhakts are running scared or keeping quiet even as their supporters are facing flak for views expressed in the past.  Waking up late to the issue of runaway pump prices – which will also lead to cascading rise in prices of everything in life – the Centre is now trying to find a way out and promising lower prices in a few days from now.

Rs 84 per litre mubarak to you and your loved ones.
Actual cost I believe is Rs 31, based on info i could find online (do correct me if I'm wrong, happy to learn) .. the rest are central & state taxes, cess & commissions. Just so you know that the price can be brought down.
