Religion and politics make strange bedfellows

It is best that religion be kept out of politics was what the tweeple seemed to say even amid their anger.

Amit Shah

A recent controversial letter of the Archbishop of Delhi, Rev Anil Couto, made a splash on Twitter. Tweeple of the Hindu majority were naturally enough incensed at the thought of the Church getting into politics and the Vatican was trolled although the pastor urged his followers to pray for the country before the 2019 election. It was in his speaking a "turbulent political atmosphere" that he seemed to get political and was severely criticised.

The interplay of faith and politics is not at all new to India and it is not as if Hindu holy men have not played the same card to ask for votes for certain parties.  Amit Shah asked the holy man not to polarise Indians while Rajnath declared that India does not discriminate on the basis of religion while reminding the priest that he had to shed his "prejudiced" mindset.

Lost in a hot debate over such a sensitive matter as religion was the sight of strains on the secular fabric of the nation by both sides taking intensely political stands on who should rule India. In a surcharged atmosphere it may never be possible to find a truly secular viewpoint. It is best that religion be kept out of politics was what the tweeple seemed to say even amid their anger.

Can you care to explain how the multitudes of tribes in North East India have largely become Christians? Did God descend Himself from Heaven one fine day and made them Christians by a stroke of hand? No lady, it is due to forced conversions due to lure n power.

All Babas have time and again asked people to vote for Modi, from rapist MSG to business tycoon Ramdev. Bhakts used to jump in delight seeing that.
But now, they are crying because Church has spoken against Modi. Hahaha #ChurchTargetsModi.

Sanjukta Basu @sanjukta
Is this the letter they are outraging about #ChurchTargetsModi? It doesn't say a word about Modi or BJP. Doesn't even mention them. Simply says Prayers for Nation. Godi media mostly outrages over invisible things in air, but this is like outraging in vacuum, not even air.

Sethu krishnan @Sethu krishnanTS
Yes. No Islamic or Christian institutions have the right for that. But each individual has the right. Religion poisons everything. Atleast in the case of politics, be secular. Both sides

Gunja Kapoor @gunjakapoor
Newly Elected MLAs in #Karnataka - 99% of all Congress MLAs are crorepatis 98% of all BJP MLAs are crorepatis 95% of all JDS MLAs are crorepatis Now you know why bidding starts from 100 crores minimum

Naveen Cherian @navencherian
Why should they take it as a privilege ? Gandhi did not fight for Hindu only India. He fought for a democractic country where everyone can practice any religion

 vijaya kumaran@vijatta
Christian's should respect the Indian culture. The Abrahamic religions are imported and are aggressive soul harvesters. So long as Indian culture and traditions respected, religion is not an issue.Let these imported faith don't undermine Hindu culture and traditions

Church should NOT interfere in politics. Just like Baba Ramdev, Sri Sri, Sadhguru, Tarun Sagar and Shahi Imam. #ChurchTargetsModi

Wake up all... We all are the same friends who laughed at the same jokes, gave each other a helping hand, celebrated each others festivals, cried at the sorrows of each other. If you truly love India, dont let politicians divide us and this nation again

Patel Nishank@patelnikss
If churches should not interfere in politics then why they write a letter that our community is not safe etc. whenever elections is near.same thing they do when gujarat election was near

Y GOKUL@ygsense
Didn't you know that any human being living on earth, who claims he is a Hindu, owns this country. Rest are all living at the mercy of Hindus. This is their narrative

Patel Nishank@patelnikss
@shivshankar Pls explain your logic of How is the Church anti Modi if it asks its parishioners to pray for Peace & Harmony and for the welfare of the nation? Unless ofcourse you want the nation to believe that Modi's agenda is to Tear up the Nation.

Samar @Samar_Anarya
Hinduism has survived for 5000 years. Khilji & Ghori came, Mughals ruled India for 250 years, British for next 200. Yet, Hinduism survived. It came under threat after formation of RSS and is fearing extinction after Modi became PM? #BJPtargetsHindutva = #ChurchTargetsModi.
