A still from the hit web series Permanent Roomates

Web series have been making the rounds for a while now with shows like The Permanent Roomates, Humorously Yours and Girl in the City becoming class acts! Popular social domains like Netflix, Hotstar and YouTube dominate all what we see, bringing our favourite shows and movies to us online, anywhere and anytime. But this “know no bounds” attitude has come with a growing disregard for the quality of traditional entertainment like cinema and theatre. The trend right now sees youngster embracing visual digital entertainment like never before and they want more!

The convenience of having it all at your own home is the driving force behind the net entertainment! Producer of upcoming web series Loose Connection and Bengaluru-based Radio Jockey Pradeepa explains how web content is specifically made for the viewer with a phone says, “Web series comes with an immense potential to reach a wide and larger audience. There is no censorship here and there is a freedom to narrate stories that are essentially good for the society. With web content, you will also be able to get analytics for who is watching your stuff and there is so much that you can learn from that.”

It seems that the audience has also grown smarter now with their understanding of the technical aspects of visual entertainment, which is digitally accessible.

Filmmaker B S Pradeep Verma says, “This easiness while watching has made the audience capable of analysing films from a technical point of view as well. Films take time to happen as we visualise, nurture it and bring it on the big screen. It has its own quality with the surround sound and the visual elements. Films come on small screen within four to five months of release, but the magic is missing! You can pause while watching, do what you need to and get back to it, so the momentum is lost there.”
