We caught up with the BB ki Vines superstar — who recently attended the WEF at Davos — and in a freewheeling chat, he stressed on the importance of satire in today’s times  as well as the importance of environmental conservation.

At 25, while most youngsters are figuring out future goals, YouTube content creator Bhuvan Bam is leagues ahead. The creator of the online channel BB ki Vines, is also the only Indian creator who was invited to attend the World Economic Forum (WEF) 2020. Bhuvan was ecstatic to be a part of the forum that included the likes of actor Deepika Padukone, US President Donald Trump and climate activist Greta Thunberg.

Excerpts from the interview:

Can you express your thoughts about the WEF and what did you expect from the same?
I expected awareness from the WEF 2020. To be honest, I have arrived with minimum background research but I’m attending some sessions, learning more about the forum and taking about it back home with me to share it with everyone else.

How important is it for you — as a comedian — to have a conversation around the subjects of empowerment, education and water conversation?
It’s very important to me personally to discuss subjects such as water conservation, girl child education, women safety etc because these are issues that I feel for strongly. My content is definitely crafted with satire to appeal to my viewers every now and then. I make a video on a subject that is important to talk about, to bring notice to.

How would you inculcate what you have witnessed at the forum in your videos when it comes to the subject of girl child education?
I prefer giving out social messages through humour and I’ll be doing just that in my own way. I’ll be vlogging the whole experience here in my style.

In a recent statement, you said, “I’m looking forward to meeting the world and industry leaders for open discussions on important subjects.” Is there any particular leader you are looking to have or have had conversations with?
I really wish to have a discussion with Mr Shekhar Gupta. I would want him to summarise the entire agenda of the forum for my audience in the simplest way possible.

Comedy is like any other art form where apart from the laughs, it also is a mirror of society. How do you manage to keep things funny yet relevant?
Like you rightly said, comedy is also a mirror of society. Whatever issues, causes, or events.

I think need to be discussed, they reflect in my videos, in my content on social media. I hope to reach out to my viewers, who are largely teens and young adults — who are leading movements, bringing about change in our country and around the world.

Your thoughts on the theme, “You Need Youth: Beacons to a Brighter”
The youth is the future. We have access to everything; we have a voice, the passion and most importantly, the curiosity.

Can you talk about the importance of satire in a time like today especially?
Satire is the best form of art. It targets issues in the wisest way possible and, to be honest, we all need to have a sense of humour in times like the present.
