Meenakshi temple declared the cleanest among 10 holy sites

Madurai: The famous Sri Meenakshi Temple in Madurai has been selected as the cleanest among the 10 holy sites across the country under the Union Government's Swachta hi Seva (Clean India scheme).

The city had also been selected for the "Clean Holy city" award, a city corporation press release said.

It said development works for the clean holy city of the country had been undertaken in and around Meenakshi temple.

The Bharat Petroleum Corporation in collaboration with the city corporation, had undertaken the clean city scheme at a cost of Rs 11.65 crore.

"The project has made Madurai a clean holy city", the release said.

Various works, including segregating garbage into bio degradable and non-degradable waste and making of natural manure had been undertaken, the release said.

The union government's water supply and sanitation department had announced the award for Madurai, it said.
