The name Ponnani was attributed by Arab traders who purchased goods from here in exchange of gold coins.

Numerous age old heritage buildings and fishing harbour accentuate the historical pride of the coastal town of Ponnani. Located on the banks of Arabian Sea, Bharathapuzha and Biyyam backwaters, it is one of the most prominent and scenic coastal towns since ancient times. The name Ponnani was attributed by Arab traders who purchased goods from here in exchange of gold coins.

Rich History and Heritage Buildings

One of the major trade centers in south India, the town witnessed terrible battles between Zamorin’s naval chief Kunjali Marakkar and the Portuguese army. Ponnani was invaded by the Portuguese in the 16th century by Hyder Ali of Mysore in the 18th century and later by the British. During Tipu Sultan’s reign, Ponnani prospered as an important centre for Islamic studies.

Centuries-old shops and religious centers are the prime attractions of Ponnani. Shops in the old street still function in the age old buildings. Laterite and wood are major components of buildings. The distinctive wooden doors, small windows, wooden pillars and traditional locks add charm to these structures.

The market area is the hub of heritage buildings both small and big. Hotels, bicycle repairing shops, grocery shops are all functioning in these age-old buildings. Narrow roads are the other speciality of this heritage town. Light house on the shores of Arabian Sea and a small bridge across Canoli canal are the other man made wonders in this town. Numerous government offices of Ponnani are functioning in the age-old buildings.

The typical traditional coastal huts are an added attraction situated near the harbour. Ponnani, known as the Mecca of Kerala, has many notable mosques and Ponnani Valiya Juma Masjid built by Sheikh Zainuddin Makdhoom-1 in traditional Kerala style of architecture during the 15th century is the most notable one.

The tombs of spiritual leaders can be found at the mosque. Ruins of warehouse during British rule are located near the Ponnani Court. Ponnaninagaram post office and Trikkavu temple are other attractions. The movie Kismath has effectively showcased the streets, shops, canals, light house and harbour of Ponnani in the most scenic way.

Need of the Hour: Heritage Town status

The old buildings of Ponnani are posing a major threat to the life of commuters and pedestrians and there is a move to demolish them. Some buildings are already in ruins while others remain disused. But once these symbols vanish, the standing testimony of this heritage town will be lost forever.

Notable historians suggest that the centuries-old buildings should be protected at any cost and Ponnani be declared a heritage town. A visit to Ponnani sure provides valuable insights into the unique and diverse heritage of South Malabar.
