Nair Hospital treats HIV positive woman after The Asian Age report
The hospital's dean Dr Ramesh Bharmal said that an inquiry has been set up.
Mumbai: A day after The Asian Age reported on the plight of a 40-year-old commercial sex worker afflicted with HIV who was denied treatment at the civic-run Nair Hospital by a doctor due to her vocation, the hospital's dean Dr Ramesh Bharmal said that an inquiry has been set up.
As part of the inquiry, statements of the HIV patient and the doctor — Dr Hiranya Deka — who allegedly denied her the treatment, will be taken and verified. Dr Bharmal said that action would be taken against those found guilty. However Dr Deka denied the allegations levelled against him. “I haven’t misbehaved or humiliated any HIV patient. My duty is to serve patients. I am doing that,” he said. Sources said that Dr Deka has been transferred to another department of the hospital after the incident.
