Delhi: No hike in power tariff this year

New Delhi: Consumers can heave a sigh of relief, as Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission has not hiked power tariff for third year in a row in the capital. In an official statement, the DERC said there is “no change in the energy charge for all categories.” 

Only the hi-end consumers will witness a minor increase in their electricity bills due to the revision in “fixed charge” component methodology. Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal congratulated the public for choosing his honest government for the move in a tweet.

The electricity tariff is constituted of two components — fixed charge and energy charge. The fixed charge remains constant irrespective of the energy consumed, while energy charge varies as per usage.

The DERC said while there is no change in charges for consumers with a connection of 2 kW, consumers with 3,4 and 5 kW connections will have to pay an increased fixed charge of Rs 105, Rs 140, and Rs 175, respectively, as against Rs 100 earlier. All the changes are meant for domestic connections and not commercial ones.

Similarly, there will be no change in electricity bills for those consuming 200 units to 400 units. Power bills of households that consume between 800 units to a 1,000 units will rise by 1.13 per cent. Those who consume between 400 to and 600 units will face a 0.14 per cent hike, while there will be a 0.80 per cent hike for those who consume between 600 units and 800 units.

The DERC has cut the fixed charge for low-end users having an electricity connection of 1 kw. Such users will now have to pay Rs 20, instead of the earlier Rs 40 earlier. 

The bills of households that consume up to 200 units will fall by 2.38 per cent. There is no change in fixed charge being paid by users with 2 kw connection, they’ll continue to pay Rs 40. This will have a minor impact in power tariff in the city. The changes will come into effect from September 1. Electricity tariff was last revised in the year 2014 in the city.
