New Delhi: While the entire country is under a security blanket post Pulwama terror attack, over 37 per cent CCTV cameras installed by the Delhi police at Lutyens’ Delhi in the New Delhi district are not in working condition.

As per the police data accessed by this newspaper, Delhi police has installed 560 cameras in the New Delhi district. Out of these, 212 cameras are not working.

The New Delhi district has the major installations including at the Parliament, Rashtrapati Bhawan, PM’s residence, embassies, and at residences of MPs. In addition, installations have been made at a number of five star hotels and at residences and offices of the Central and Delhi government employees.

The police claimed that CCTV cameras in vulnerable areas of the national capital are meant to prevent crime and anti-terror activities.

According to sources, these CCTV cameras become dysfunctional temporarily owing to various reasons including technical snags, construction and digging work undertaken by civic agencies or Delhi Metro, etc. All possible steps are taken by the Delhi police to make these cameras functional.

Further, all these cameras are under the annual maintenance contract with the installing agencies for proper maintenance, repair, and functioning.

Delhi police has informed that the installation of cameras is a continuous process and new locations are being identified on security vulnerability analysis.

Installation and functioning of cameras in the national capital has been one of the key issues in Delhi politics.
