Waste reduced to 7,200 MT
The BMC has made it compulsory for housing societies and bulk generators to segregate and compost waste.
Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) decision to reduce the number of garbage vehicles has been bolstered by its claims of substantial reduction in the quantity of waste generated in the city. Due to various measures undertaken recently, the daily quantity of waste has been reduced to 7,200 metric tonnes from 10,000 metric tonnes.
To reduce waste generation, the BMC has implemented several measures across the city. It has made it compulsory for housing societies and bulk generators like hotels and malls to segregate and compost wet waste.
The BMC has identified 3,374 bulk wate generators across the city, and notices were issued to 3,153 of them to process and dispose of wet garbage on their premises. They include big housing societies, five-star hotels, malls and industries that produce more tha-n 100kg of waste daily and have an area of m-ore than 20,000 sq mt. The bulk waste generators were asked to provide facilities like organic waste converter, vermi-composting and bio-methanation to treat the waste at source.
However, only 1,433 housing societies, which form mere 40 per cent, have begun waste composting units on their premises, whereas 325 have sought an extension. The BMC has prosecuted 905 housing societies and also collected Rs 23.38 lakh for failing to process wet waste on their premises.
