In-principal approval to elevated cycle tracks
Track will be constructed over a proposed highway.
New Delhi: As a major gift to the Delhiites, the ministry of road transport and highways has given in-principle approval to the elevated cycle tracks that would come up between Geeta Colony and Shastri Park in East Delhi. The cycle track will be constructed over a proposed highway from Akshardham to western Uttar Pradesh via Loni border.
The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has proposed converting the existing Yamuna Pusta Road into a highway so as to connect the cities of Baghpat and Saharanpur on the request of the Lok Sabha member from Northeast Delhi, Manoj Tiwari. The government is going to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) of the key infrastructure project to decongest East Delhi.
Mr Tiwari has been demanding a signal-free corridor for Shastri Park. He had also written to Union transport minister Nitin Gadkari, seeking signal-free connectivity for the heavily congested areas of his Lok Sabha constituency. Mr Tiwari recently sat on hunger strike demanding signal-free connectivity at Shastri Park.
“The ministry of road transport and highways has approved the project in-principle. The NHAI will be preparing the detailed project report. This project will be a big relief to lakhs of commuters in the trans-Yamuna region besides adding to the aesthetics. The elevated cycle track will also mitigate the safety concerns of the cyclists as it will be completely segregated from the motorised traffic,” said Mr Tiwari.
“The elevated cycle tracks will be safe for cyclists. The elevated track will be connected to the road through ramps at major locations. The location of the elevated tracks will be worked out in the DPR. The NHAI has proposed constructing cycle tracks and pedestrian walkway vertically above the highway. This will also have the provision of vertical gardens,” said a source.
