Delhi zoo to plant 50,000 saplings this month

New Delhi: The National Zoological Park, popularly known as Delhi zoo, will plant 50,000 saplings in its sprawling premises this month as part of Van Mahotsav celebrations.
Observing Van Mahotsav week, from July 1 to 7, is a long-standing tradition at the picturesque zoo, spread over 176 acres with the ruins of the Purana Qila in the backdrop. But this year is different with authorities saying they have widened the scale of plantation.
“This is an annual drive here but we have widened the scale of plantation this time. In fact, we yesterday invited around 100 schoolchildren at the zoo and distributed 200 saplings among them. Besides, we have also planted 200 saplings,” the director, Renu Singh said.
“We have targetted to plant 50,000 saplings,” she added. Herbs, shrubs, hedges and various fruit trees are among the saplings being planted during the ongoing drive, National Zoological Park curator R.A. Khan said. Zoo staffers participated in a plantation drive.
