PM Modi chairs meet to expedite highway project

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting with senior government officials of Delhi, Haryana and road transport and highway ministry on Wednesday, and asked them to speed-up the eight-lane section of Mukarba Chowk to Panipat section of National Highway-1.

According to the sources, the meeting was held last Wednesday (August 29), in which Prime Minister Modi asked Haryana government’s top officials to acquire and handover the land required and also complete the tree feeling work. He also asked Delhi government’s senior officials to remove encroachment and complete the demarcation of land work by September 15.

The PM asked the Delhi, Haryana and highway ministry to work in co-ordination and speed-up the projecty, said sources. The project was stalled due to several reasons, including land acquisition, permission for axing of trees and others. Due to slow work, commuters had to face a lot of problems during nights, particularly in foggy season, as the service lanes were dug up at several places.

Now, service lanes have been constructed at several places, giving resp-ite to commuters. The Delhi-Panipat stretch of NH-1 would be expanded to an eight-laned dedicated hig-hway to meet the increasing demand of traffic growth.

Earlier on November 1, 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for eight laning of the National Highway between Mukarba in Delhi and Sonipat in Haryana. He gave the example of South Korea, where construction of a highway through the country had given a huge impetus to development.

This highway project will reduce traffic jam and pollution in Delhi and will also benefit the states of Haryana and Delhi.
